What are the main events for today?
EUROPEAN SESSION In the European session, the only highlight is the Swiss CPI data which is expected to increase to 1.0% vs 0.8% prior. The data won't change anything for the SNB, though, as the central bank remains comfortable keeping monetary policy steady with core inflation within target. We will also get the final PMIs for the major Eurozone economies and the UK, but the market focuses more on preliminary data, so the final readings are almost never a market-moving release. AMERICAN SESSION In the American session, we get the US Jobless Claims figures and the US ISM Manufacturing PMI. Initial Claims are expected at 200K vs 197K prior, while Continuing Claims are seen at 1725K vs 1719K prior. The data won't change anything for the Fed since the central bank's focus is on inflation and given the fact that the totality of US jobs data has been pointing to a stable/strong labour market. The US ISM Manufacturing PMI is expected at 55.0 vs 54.6 prior. The ISM report has lost some of its market-moving potential since the S&P Global US PMIs get released earlier. As a reminder, the S&P Global PMIs showed a strong acceleration in US economic activity to the highest since 2021. The bad news is that firms’ input costs jumped at the steepest rate for four years, with fuel and transport costs spiking higher thanks to the rise in oil prices seen during the month, which will add further to the upward pressure on selling prices and inflation in the coming months.
